My guess is (nobody knows for sure) that Cadet Jubal Early made a snarky sexual remark about some girl.  Lewis Armistead took offense and smashed a dinner plate over Jubal’s head.  The girl was Miss Marie LaCroix from some big horse farm just above Savannah.  He called her hard-hearted Hannah, a six-pounder- way too small to be a shore battery.  Who did she report to?  A report is more than a document that presents information.

In some cases you can use sound instead or report as a noun or a verb when it comes to topics like bang, loud noise and the like.  Did he bang LaCroix?  Hm.  Big secret-keepers say:  those who know- do not say, and those who say- do not know.  White puff @ Pulaski rolled windward by the pop at three miles out buoy and the shore batteries were friendly.  It was the First Salute to our fictional flagge von Hessen with her candy-cane stripes and sword-wielding lions.  Saw manticore… and Iran.

And in a world of people, there’s only you and I
There ain’t nothing come between us in the end

The Dart’s bat wings unfolded suggesting a dragon.  Teddy Roosevelt’s great white fleet was sailing over the bounding mainstream showing girl the checkout flag while family was regaled by wonderful original tales of papa’s lovely little war.  Chaska the china man no longer went aloft over those bat-like wings.  We had lenses that could see a gull’s gonads squatting on the horizon.  Henry the howler signaled the sailing yacht.  Heave to.  We come aboard.

A pathetic pomp from her aft deck gun as she opened her square sails to the wind confident of her speed. She showed us her ass.  Dart ate the exploding bitter pill.  Thabo the thumper grumbled in the boiler bang below:  why we need sails when we got turbines.  Chaska knew.  I leave it up to you, shadow dancing.  Torpedo lost said Henry.  Fish breached bounded and sounded all the way to the kill volt arc white lightning and she burst into flame.  No, future divers.

There were no survivors.

Give me more, drag me across the floor
Shadow dancing, all this and nothing more

Do you know what I like about the South?  Their officers.  Sure Grant and Sherman were the best.  And you can chinwag all day long what about Lee and Jackson.  I’ll tell you this:  the yanks would have smashed them at Gettysburg or Jackson would have gotten his fool ass killed later than he did.  Never met Jackson.  But I knew Jubal Early and of course Wade Hampton III.  That’s right.  Rich boy name and plenty of fungible loot to back it up too.

I had no intention of participating in that battle- Gettysburg- whatsoever.  A sutler or victualer is a civilian merchant who sells provisions to an army in the field, in camp, or in quarters. Sutlers sell wares from the back of a wagon or a temporary tent, traveling with an army or to remote military outposts.  Sutler wagons are military, while chuck wagons are for civilian wagon trains and outposts.  After the war, southern officers promoted themselves to general.

Pandora nodded affirmative.  Lieutenant general, if you please.  Henry snickered.  They had a crotch-full of them after the war.  Folks who have a lot of stuff will give over large amounts of it for something they do not have.  Panty had to know what that is.  It varies.  South Carolina is too small to be a state and too large to be an insane asylum.  A loony bin.  Right.  We all have one of those.  That’s where we wad up and throw crazy ideas that will never work.

I was born the son of a lawless man
Always spoke my mind with a gun in my hand
Lived nine lives
Gunned down ten
Gonna ride like the wind
And I’ve got such a long way to go
(Such a long way to go)
To make it to the border of Mexico
So I ride like the wind

Hampton had a ton of slaves, horses and land… but not much acreage by Georgia standards.  By Texas standards it was a postage stamp.  But they might work someday.  Exactly.  Otherwise we couldn’t have thought of them in the first place.  Right.  But Virginia standards were the metric and the Richmond boys were in the catbird seat.  Hampton was an aristocrat of the old order- on a new continent.  New continent my ass interrupted Chaska.  We’ll get to that.

We already there added Thabo.  That’s right.  Modern frigates can sail at a speed of 30 knots

(and carry a crew of 200).

Hampton knew the difference between nobility and aristocracy.  He was born with one- and had cunning to hold on to the other.  Which one.  Aristocracy is a pipe dream.  Nobility is a beating heart and all the bullshit that implies.  Infers. Whatever.  Hampton found himself king shit of turd mountain as the war closed in.  Henry saw it by sea.  Thabo was on the river.  Chaska was involved in the Sioux wars going live.  The year is 1865.

One day in 1862 Carl Schurz had Henry the sutler arrange 100 men in a large semi-circle (to show them a trick).  100 paces in arc of the semi-circle of grumbling coughing smoking men (he sold them their tobacco) Henry had to shout.  Behind Henry was a large pumpkin on a stump exactly 100 yards away.  Henry spat the cartridge paper while loading from the muzzle and began, until you can do this… (Henry wheeled, fired, and the pumpkin exploded) you ain’t worth a pinch of shit.  That is all said Henry and walked away.

Carl grabbed his sleeve.  I want you to show her same trick for my cavalry officers using your Walker revolver.  Cavalry?  You got a gaggle of riders who can stay on their horse.  For fighting on horseback talk to an Indian.  And you have none.  I will give you a regiment.  Fuck you Carl.  Give me ten men.  That’s a company.  I have an Indian- but she is not available now.  You will purchase optics from me (alone) – a thousand dollars’ worth – and I must have them for you today.  I make you Captain.

I am already captain of the fastest ship in the world.  I will trade your authentic costume for six weeks’ worth of training horses’ men altogether or separately does not matter.  I don’t believe Hampton has a time machine- but he has access to someone who has one for sure.  My father made me hunt with a rifle.  You made me kill with one.  You were wrong about the revolutions of 48.  Right about this time.

Machine.

Accused and tried and told to hang
I was nowhere in sight when the church bells rang
Never was the kind to do as I was told
Gonna ride like the wind before I get old
It is the night

DPD:  sell very moon; 1863~ҷ&7ↀ4Δ headlines reed=> monitor lizard!  Gate house etc..

The year is 1862.  Again.  The Buoys are in combat together again.  But not like it was during the war.  The US Civil War.  The first (?) time.  Wade Hampton was mounted on Butler.  Henry sat next to next to Hampton atop Pony.  Thabo was driving Jack and Chaska was no doubt in the bushes somewhere watching it all.  The Buoys knew how the war would end.  Knew this was the beginning of little Mac’s failed peninsula campaign.

Gettysburg had not happened yet, and they had to get back there to find the Dart.  Not far at all in 1910.  Forever right now.  She has no name?  Hampton was comparing horses and equipment.  See you have your large Walker horse-pistol and not the sabre you wore at the lodge.  You might be mistaken.  It’s slightly different every time.  Your boys look pretty good now.  The ones on horses anyway.  These butternut beans marching by… My infantry.  Yes.  Babies they agreed.

With fire in your eyes shake those
Butterflies and do the best you can
Victory, victory let the party begin
Victory, victory let’s do it again
You are the best, you seem to stand
Out from the rest

Pony snorted and shouldered Butler’s hindquarters off the shady spot.  Butler chuffed as horses do and moved Hampton in position for a strike with the fine saber Hampton had in hand.  You’re going to meet the Monitor.  Cheese box on a raft.  Quite so.  Our business will be in Pennsylvania.  This time maybe.  You sure brushed him off quick boss noted Thabo.  Grim business ahead says Henry.  He might win this time.  Nobody knows that better than he does.

Your black ass better not be there unless you want to shovel corpses again.  Jack moved on pulling the heavy equipment but Henry longed for a Jenny with yellow wings.  That mule goanna change but not me- this nigger ant goanna do no dead meat now.  Hampton was badly wounded in fighting east of town with Custer’s Michigan Cavalry Brigade, receiving three saber cuts to the head and shrapnel in his hip.

After Hampton is wounded the brigade is commanded by Colonel Laurence S. Baker of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry Regiment.  Hampton shared an ambulance with Major General John Hood on the way back to Virginia and recovered from his injuries to eventually take J.E.B. Stuart’s place as commander of the cavalry corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. He would survive the war to become both Governor of and Federal Senator from South Carolina.

Henry had to deal with old wooden head out west and Chaska would be aboard the Tallahassee by now.  Thabo headed for the river as soon as all giggling Johnny mops were out of sight.  Old man is waiting there to carry you to freedom.  Follow the drinking gourd.  Oh brothers lets go down.  Down to the river to prey.

(They saw the light.)

Your intentions to be more than a honorable mention
You must feel that victory, release that

Henry was a caretaker- not a caregiver.  He was born to take care of the Baron’s forest after his father the Jägermeister didn’t die… but instead sent him to America to procure Hawken rifles for Hessian soldiers.  When Baron son Christoph became the Baron upon the old Baron’s death, he sold the forest to the Prussians and called Henry to Berlin to maintain the house and title von Hesse.

It was a powerful house and still is but in the end, Henry stayed with the forest along the Bieber because he did not belong to the Baron.  He did not belong to the western woods either, nor the Bieber river.  His father and the Baron sent him to Scotland at age 13 to learn forestry and the secret disguise of (Ghillie) fair highland lassies.

Thabo is a caregiver- not a caretaker.  His real name in Zulu (Xhosa, Swati and Ndebele) land was Lethabo meaning happiness or joy.  Thabo the thumper was born a slave among slaves bought and sold along the Mississippi.  You could usually tell who was a slave along big Mo because they were black.  Still are- but now there are white and red niggers all along the delta.

Foreign types with the hookah pipes say

Some are worth a billion dollars now.  Thabo cared about everything and took care of nothing.  His size, strength and smarts had always set a precise value on what his life was worth- so Thabo was always accurately aware of commodity prices wherever the rivers were big.

Chaska gives care when needed and takes care when he has to.  He would guess he could change but he found out why some of the Lakota ways are the best ways.  Chaska name is eldest son of the bear.  Chaska was large for an Indian and that is why his life is an inside joke like it is for all Americans who now have to call themselves Indians.

Xhosa, Swati and Ndebele people living in New Delhi would get the joke.  Joke is worth the same as care there.  Where there are more English speakers than in America, one would think that has something to do with England (because it does).  White man has reservations about living in small colony along denial. Henry heard the bugle call boots and saddles with lyrics.  Where are you going whaddya gonna stubba bubbadub do right now.  Or something like that.  Henry rode regularly with the Union cavalry during the war.  Easiest way to get to St. Louis, land or sea, which was the easiest way to get to New Orleans.

Boots and saddles reminded him of the ass over apple cart beating you get falling down the stairs by stepping out in the dark.  Three or four point hold on the horse.  You trade two legs that hold for (four) legs that run, etc.  Many ended their cavalry career with one hold being an ankle in the stirrup and contact point being their head bumpity bump.  The rebs liked Colt pistols.  Yanks usually carried sabers for many reasons.

Eisenhower means iron-cutting in Dutch talk.  Henry’s best customers were yanks during the war, but most of his best friends were rebs like Pettigrew and Early- but notice how the Dart’s hull resembles a steam locomotive.  Is you right General Knight?  For days, he crept through Chester County’s leafy Pennsylvania communities, dotted with farms, thick woods and cul-de-sacs.

Shortly after escaping, he pilfered a backpack and found a razor, which he used to shave his beard in an attempt to make himself less recognizable.  Levi J. Knight was present when the annual Convention of the Stockholders of the Brunswick and Florida Railroad Company was held at Brunswick, GA on Wednesday, May 13, 1857. Almost ten years after the revolution. Henry was almost 30, Daisy almost 20.

… Moses stood on the Red Sea shore
Smotin’ that water with a two-by-four
… If I could I surely would
Stand on the rock where Moses stood

The good news was that construction of the road was progressing, but there was no report on the financial condition of the company.   In December, 1863, the 29th/30th GA militia totaled 341 men and 195 arms, but few surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels W.D. Mitchell, R. Spaulding, and William J. Young; Lieutenant Colonels T.W. Alexander and W.W. Billopp; and Majors Levi J. Knight, John C. Lamb, and John J. Owen.

How Knight promoted himself from Major to General was common practice right after the war.  Any war. Nobody thanked anybody for the war in those days.  Why would they.  But the boys had plenty of energy to thank themselves. We took boots from the yanks, locos from the rebs. General Knight was among those to negotiate an agreement with the Main Trunk railroad to secure funding a railroad line…

Late Unpleasant

Thanks for the times that you’ve given me

And now that we’ve come to the end of our rainbow
There’s something I must say out loud

DPD: Blue Moon; 1898~63 , Cemetery Hill calf path to pub 1066 Again Court 56 BC

Beauty is a tool for women like upper body strength for men (requires deodorant). The closer you get to the king, the greater the chance he will want to poke your wife.  The hell you say snapped Pandora.  Not among gentlemen countered Chaska (the crazy Indian) with heap plenty sarcasm.  Especially among gentlemen growl Thabo the nigger.  Henry continued.  Just offshore vessels of varying size in the Norman fleet rock at anchor.

Their captains are ready to respond promptly to the duke should he need them to ferry troops to another point on the coast. The armies were matched in strength, with each numbering about 5,000 men. Harold had 2,000 housecarls and 3,000 militia, all of which fought dismounted, while William had 2,000 cavalry and 3,000 foot.

Daisy had one day to spare before their train car retrofitted to the train for Albany. Paul, the props and costumes manager (for the Boston Academy of the Arts) was showcasing much of what was to be auctioned in a few days, and Daisy had a private showing. She had a mental list of what she would need to stuff into Henry’s trunks and she gave Paul the impression that she was permanently relocating to Boston in order to escape (certain problems in) the south.

Paul told her to pick out what she was interested in, he would bundle and crate it all for her to pick up in the morning. He threw in poster paste and stacks of theatrical posters that she fawned over. She explained that she needed her guardian to get the money when the banks opened in the morning. Normandy invasion.

When we are together, the moments I cherish
With every beat of my heart
To touch you, to hold you, to feel you, to need you
There’s nothing to keep us apart

The reception committee of Daisy’s girls… a spectacular sight of colors, feathers and raucous celebration. Daisy made sure Henry had a place by the driver of the second wagon so he could guard his cargo to her theater where she insisted he could stay with it until he made his final arrangements to disburse it all to investors or armies, or whomever he had plans and ideas for.

She collected her sumptuous winnings from him, gave him the keys to the backstage warehouse and excused herself to dance her way down the street with her girls. Just before they turned away, Daisy shouted up to him as he situated himself next to the driver. He was content with being able to monitor all the trunks in both wagons as they got ready to go toward the theater.

The Late Unpleasantness has European cousins. The unifications of Germany and Italy- same thing. American exceptionalism blocked reconstruction and framework of the War Between the States into a larger Atlantic narrative.  Some view the war not only as an American event but a singular American event.  Like the Prussians between protestant and catholic, the Southrons thought they could win a war in two theatres… by charging in all directions.

The War Between the States. War of Northern Aggression is what Jubal Early called it. Civil War. The Great Rebellion.   The reluctance of Americans on what to call the great conflict of the 1860s makes a difference. Perhaps not to Pemberton passing out postcards in the gay 90s. Hyper-genderization forms under selection pressure.

Going That Way

You are my fire
The one desire
Believe when I say
I want it that way

DPD; 18/19/1065 Triploid moons; Appomattox in my lunch box, backstreet boys play (dice).

Lee Longstreet Jackson.    Lincoln Grant Sherman.  That’s all you need to know (for now).  The USA had not adopted Henry yet.  Thabo was clearly an African.  Henry a European.  Blazing sun just made Thabo turn blacker.  Made Henry burn red.  So guess who was left to go aloft.  Chaska the big chief Indian lawyer.

Long before he red in law school.  Longstreet.  The old war horse.  Chaska went to sea- Henry’s suggestion.  Spotted Hawk in the future.  See him in high desert Navajo blanket and white eagle feathers.  He poses with a Henry repeater chambered in .45 Colt.  Spotted Hawk a breakfast for the long-knives.  Longstreet huh.

Long Colt brass cackled Chaska.  Ogden Nash says when you’re wrong admit it.  When you’re right shut up.  The abolitionists would not shut up.  Who is Ogden Nash.  I don’t know.  Who is John Galt.  It’s a bumper sticker.  What’s a bumper sticker.  You see concluded Pandora.  When you get back they ask too many stupid questions.

Am I your fire?
Your one desire
Yes, I know it’s too late
But I want it that way

Fouls the mission and it won’t fire.  Thabo rumbled.  They talk like that when they get back.  John Galt is strange fruit hanging from a poplar car.  Gotta get back to Motown and crack some cases.  No question a stupid question say Chaska piously.  Shut up Buddha snaps Henry the brass receiver.

Imagine if Lincoln and Lee had been able to work together on reconstruction.  But then- the random element.  A mad actor who knows the theater of war is real theatre.  Because it is.  Longstreet accepted the surrender.  Booth (can and did) except the surrender just like Jubal Early.

The novel is an attempt to balance the inequities of history.  Black lives (like that von Booth) do indeed matter.  Little wheel spin and spin.  Big wheel turn around.  Altered states are different than when matter changes state, and when spinning big wheel is out of balance you get Koyaanisqatsi (ass von Glass).

You just don’t do that.  It would be like working your whole life to rise in the royal court and then shouting HEY KINGIE.  He would point to a guard and say- you there.  Kill that man (if one had not done so already).  And then the king breaks the guard for killing you without orders.

That was Tom (fool) Jackson.  Stonewall for sure.  Never met the man.  Rebel army worshipped hierarchy.  Grant wasn’t like that but bricked wall cigars.  Played cards with Bill Sherman before the war though.  When we saw each other during war we acted like we did not know each other.  We took care of separation business.

Wanted it that way.

Tell me why
Ain’t nothin’ but a heartache
Ain’t nothin’ but a mistake
Tell me why
I never wanna hear you say (don’t wanna hear you say)
I want it that way

When the Dart developed the capacity to go weird (w∑rd )- Henry began keeping secrets.  Everyone does that.  The dark kind of secrets you can’t even tell yourself because they are too embarrassing or they frighten you.  Henry’s secrets were of the latter kind.  It was sliding from apprehension to terror to horror.

When the ship’s black hull absorbs a hand in seconds- or minutes and no one hears a scream. And no one remembers.  Face, words… nothing.  When the Dart began to transcend time she first went to where she picked up the scent.  The battle well-known to you and me- July 1, 1863.  The ricochet went to Copper Harbor in the late 19th century.

Henry avoided doctors.  During the battle they were butchers.  They have improved.  Now they have microscopes (Henry smuggled lenses).  But the doctors used a stethoscope to declare they heard two heartbeats.  Henry was not pregnant.  He had two hearts inside his chest (confirmed in 1906).  But during the war one said that’s impossible.

Listen damn you said the other.  Rau! Smit dummkopf! I’ll have you both shot (concluded Henry).  Doctor was derived from the Latin– meaning teach or scholar. Only by special arrangement do any of the preceding professionals teach now.  They learned only what they needed to learn.  Henry hired them.  Dart ate them later.

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

GmbH Tallahassee Maximus was only a transformer then.  Transforming time is what she did as a surface raider.  Transcending time is done in her dark Oobleck cocoon that expands with increasing wↀrd.  Few of the crew need visuals.  Shakedown cruise.  Floating in dark and quiet exhaling Superior they left with a complement of 50 and came back an hour later with 3.

They had been gone for seven years around both horns.  Henry renamed her the Dart and Chaska and Thabo never came aboard again (when she was on).  The red Coke sign was seen during reconstruction after Sherman and Grant had finished their war.

Schatzenputz GmbH perfected micro predation with a mix of technology and talent.  Rich parasites are prey.  Ship is compartmentalized.  In all predators the prey drive follows an inevitable sequence: Search (orient, nose/ear/eye); Stalk; Chase; Bite (grab-bite, kill-bite); Dissect; Consume.  Imagine a tube 50 feet wide (street) two blocks long (houses).

Henry’s house of aviation will Rogers into being.  You’re my favorite actor because you didn’t act. You just were. And what a were there was, ol’ friend. Did I do right by you? Poet Ogden Nash had you about right when he wrote.  I work with gum and lariat, to entertain the proletariat, and with my Oklahomely wit…

I brighten up the world a bit.

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

DPD:  1863~72 breech berth; Norfolk and southrons, 2070adπ3070bc.

They got Henry to do an interview in 1872.  It was not easy.  Chaska was caught up in the great Sioux war and insisted the GmbH have a face and voice.  To avoid detection (paradox) is what he said.  Thabo is thumping Knights of Labor below Huron on the motor city railroad and was in black face all the time.  Henry was selling railroad sandwiches.

Corned beef and Rubin, my very human mind, subject to distractions you never see in LLMs, drifts to the arc of this company that in eight short years has gone from a floundering bunch of researchers to a Promethean behemoth that has changed the world.  Henry would have liked that- but he wasn’t listening.  He was sharing a cab with the reporter on the way to Horace Greeley’s funeral. Henry liked machines who could write- not scream.

In 1878, The Remington 2 typewriter solved the problem with the addition of the lower case, a turning point for this revolutionary machine. By the mid-1890s, there were as many as sixty typewriter manufacturers in America and Europe. In 1881, the first typing class opened at the YWCA in New York, a significant step towards women’s emancipation.

Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray

And then we’d be happy (and then we’d be happy)
Oh, wouldn’t it be nice?

Eliphalet the younger Remington worked with his father in the forge, and at 23 he hand-made a flintlock rifle.  The rifle received such a response that Remington decided to manufacture it in quantity. By 1840, he formed the firm of E. Remington and Sons, which he headed until his death in 1861. The Remington revolver was a secondary, supplemental issue firearm for the Union Army until the Colt factory fire of 1864.

Due to the fire, the Colt 1860 Army was not available for some time. Subsequently, large numbers of the Remington revolver were ordered by the U.S. government. Samuel Remington traveled to Washington in the fall of 1861, offering to sell his revolvers to the government at a cost of $15 each—or $10 less than what Colt was charging the Ordnance Department for its .44-cal. revolvers.

Even with the reduced cost, the Army, by the end of March 1862, had taken delivery from the Remington factory of only 7,250 .36-cal. revolvers and 850 .44-cal. Beals revolvers at a cost to the Army of $15 each. It saw use in the American West, both in its original percussion configuration and as a metallic cartridge conversion, as well as around the world.

You know it seems the more we talk about it
It only makes it worse to live without it
But let’s talk about it
Oh, wouldn’t it be nice?
